VOTE NO ON ROBERTS’ DARK ACT

PROTECT STATES’ RIGHTS AND YOUR FAMILY’S RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD

A vote is scheduled tomorrow that could keep Americans in the DARK forever.  Please act NOW before it is too late.  Let us be clear. If the federal government is not prepared to pass a GMO labeling law that is as strong as the state laws already on the books, then the federal government should do nothing. The opposition to GMO labeling has been working overtime for months trying to keep us in the DARK about the food we are feeding ourselves and our families. However, Monsanto, the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association and all their industry allies have failed. The people of this country have thus far prevailed in keeping our Senators from voting against our interests. It hasn’t been easy and the fight is far from over. Tomorrow could change everything.  We need to stand strong and be louder than ever.

Senator Roberts’ “DARK Act” is scheduled for a *cloture vote tomorrow and they will need sixty votes to prevail.  Every vote counts as this will be very close.   The latest version of the “DARK Act” would preempt the states, codify voluntary labeling and give the USDA discretion to write our future.   We must stop the Roberts’ bill and remain vigilant knowing that the real threat may be hidden behind closed doors where our rights could be compromised away without our input, knowledge or consent.

That is why our message today is very simple, clear and direct. Please call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them that unless they can pass a law that is as strong as the state laws already on the books, they should do nothing. We will accept nothing less than mandatory, on pack GMO labeling. This is an extremely reasonable request. This is a right that the citizens of 64 other countries already enjoy. American companies are already labeling their products for the overseas markets.  Americans deserve these same rights and it is up to us to make sure we prevail.

It is time for the United States government to stand up for the people of this country. We can not allow them to compromise our rights away in order to protect industry interests. Our elected officials need to understand that we are NOT going away. If a law is passed that does not give us the transparency in our food that we deserve, the people of this country will be louder than ever. We must stand in our power and show that we have only just begun to fight. We will not accept our rights being trumped by industry any longer.

This is not just about GMO labeling. This is about our lawmakers showing us that democracy is alive and well in the United States of America. The Senate can do the right thing today and stand with their constituents and the consumers of this country. Or, they can be on the wrong side of history and face being exposed for what they really are: an extension of the corporate interests funding their campaigns. Let your voice be heard today. Please call your senators and amplify your voice by asking all your friends and family to do the same thing.

*Cloture - a method of closing a debate and causing an immediate vote to be taken on the question.
